Pineapple Perfection Green Smoothie

23 Feb

Club Tropicana, drinks are green. Vitamins and Minerals there’s enough for everyone.   Pineapples are rich in the enzyme Bromelain, which has potent anti-inflammatory properties and aids in digestion. Kale packs a powerful green punch as it’s incredibly high in Vitamins A and C. The pineapple really dominates the flavour so you can’t taste those bitter greens.

Ingredients

1 Banana

1 medium Pineapple

1 handful of Spinach

1 Handful of Kale

1 Lemon

2tbsp honey

250ml/1 cup of water

3 Ice cubes

Step 1

Cut up the banana and pineapple. Add them to the blender alongside the cold water and the ice cubes.

Blend.

Step 2

Add the spinach and kale.

Blend.

Step 3

Add the juice of one lemon and the honey.

Blend.

Sit back and enjoy the tropical taste sensation that is the Pineapple Perfection Green Smoothie.

Top tip- make sure you include the ice cubes. Budget blenders tend to generate a lot of heat and no one wants a warm smoothie!

Wishing you health, happiness and sparkle,

Rachael

Rawesome, Wholesome, You

20 Feb

It’s so easy to immediately choose food that’s low in fat or low in sugar regardless of whether it’s low in nutritional value. I used to  eat anything as long as it was delicious and wouldn’t make me gain too much weight. The sad fact is that this food didn’t make me feel good, inside or out. It didn’t give me the nutrition I needed to walk out the door with a spring in my step. I would eat countless McDonalds Happy Meal’s because I’d convinced myself that the small portion wouldn’t make me fat, but would it make me feel happy? It would make my taste-buds tingle for two whole minutes, but that kind of food is a quick fix with very little gain.  I felt miserable, my skin would break out, I’d constantly feel ill, I didn’t have any energy, enthusiasm or sparkle.

It’s so exciting when you come to a point when you realise your diet shouldn’t be about being thin, it should be about being healthy. The biggest changes I’ve made are to include a high percentage of raw food in my diet. I start my day with a green smoothie. Fruit and vegetables are bursting with essential Vitamins and Minerals that will make you look and feel amazing.

It makes so much sense to eat food in its natural raw state. Processed foods are full of nasty chemicals that the body doesn’t know how to deal with. They taste so good because they are full of artificial ingredients. How can we expect bread that’s full of preservatives and has a lengthy shelf-life to break down properly in our stomachs? On top of that processed foods often contain very few vitamins and minerals, their fibre content is so low that they make us struggle with digestion.

Since I’ve incorporated a high percentage of raw foods into my diet (including my ‘Get up and Glow’ Green Smoothie’) my skin has been clear, I’ve experienced mental clarity, I feel happier (probably those sneaky B Vitamins)  and I’m bursting with energy.

If that’s not enough to persuade you to give it a go, I’ll appeal to your vanity, raw food will:

Help you reach your natural weight

Reverse the signs of ageing

Boost a lagging immune system, giving you a healthy glow

Stop you feeling bloated or swollen (bikini body, here I come!)

Help you grow lustrous hair and strong nails

If that still doesn’t get you excited, then the fact that Natalie Portman is said to embrace the raw food revolution should. She’s simply gorgeous.

Wishing you health, happiness and sparkle,

Get up and Glow Green Smoothie

20 Feb

This smoothie really gets me bursting with energy first thing in the morning. I’ve never enjoyed the bitter taste of green vegetables and as a child would always be the last to leave the table when I was presented with sprouts. This smoothie is an amazing way to get greens into your diet without tasting them. The lemon, fruit and honey eradicate any of the bitterness in the greens so that the smoothie tastes sweet, fresh and clean.

I wanted this recipe to include fruit and vegetables that are inexpensive and readily available in the supermarket. I didn’t want you to have to hunt around health food shops or spend a fortune to reap the benefits of this gorgeous green smoothie.

Ingredients

1 Banana

1 ripe Pear

1/3 Cucumber

1 handful of Spinach

1 Lemon

2tbsp Honey

250ml/1cup of cold water

3 Ice cubes

Step 1

Cut up the banana and pear, add to the blender alongside the water and the ice cubes.

Blend.

Step 2

Slice the cucumber and spinach, add to the blender with the fruit.

Blend.

Step 3

Sit back and drink in liquid heath!

This smoothie is packed full of fibre, so you will feel fuller longer, you are also getting your fix of fruit and veg first thing in the morning, so you’re starting off the day on a positive. Spinach is recognised as a superfood as it is extremely rich in antioxidants, flavanoids, lutein, vitamins B, C, K and E.

I tend to have this smoothie instead of breakfast first thing in the morning and since I’ve incorporated it into my diet, I truly feel fantastic. This recipe makes enough for 3 mornings. Give this a try and see how you feel, go on, get up and glow.

Wishing you health, happiness and sparkle,

Rachael

SPF-The Ultimate Skinvestment

16 Feb

Throughout my teenage years I used to fry myself every summer. I would apply the obligatory SPF and then jump in the pool in the hope that it would wash off. I felt amazing when I returned from my holiday with my orange tan and yellow hair (copious amounts of lemon juice applied to lighten my mousey locks).

Now that I work in the beauty industry I cringe when I think of the harm I have done to my fragile skin. I would urge you to invest in a high SPF face cream, at least 20.  Up to 80% of skin ageing is a result of UV exposure and if you don’t want your skin to look like a Mulberry Bayswater then applying SPF is the best Skinvestment you’ll ever make.

Now for the science bit…

UVA rays can penetrate through cloud cover so an SPF should still be worn in deepest, darkest winter. Exposure to UV rays damage the dermal protein and collagen in your skin. Collagen is the main component of the connective tissue in the skin and acts as scaffolding in the body. Collagen gives the skin its structure and when it’s damaged or destroyed you will loose the elasticity and smoothness associated with young skin.

Unfortunately, I feel so much better when I’ve got a bit of a tan so I’ve delved into the world of sunless tanners. My absolute favourite is Face Tanner Luxe by Xen tan(£19.99, 80ml). It doesn’t smell like classic fake tans (cornflakes and soggy biscuits), its smells of vanilla, absolutely delicious. It does look a rather alarming shade of green but this cancels out any orange tones.  It’s rich in Vitamin E, Ginko Biloba and Shea butter but unfortunately no SPF, so make sure you apply one!

Fight Flu Fast

13 Feb

However fit and healthy you might be you are bound to be struck down with a cold or flu at some point. Colds and flu are super contagious as they are viral infection which means every cough or sneeze can send out thousand of virus filled mucous droplets-ew! This can prove a nightmare on the packed tubes in London.

Keep sniffles at bay with a tea that will promote immunity.

Lemon and Ginger Zinger

1 tbsp ginger (peeled and cut into chunks)

Juice of 1/2 Lemon

1tbsp Manuka Honey

1 cup of warm (not boiling water)

Pop all the ingredients in a cup and sip in front of a warm log fire, or if you’re me and haven’t quite purchased that log cabin,  perch yourself next to the nearest radiator!

The lemon and ginger will promote circulation and aid toxins in exiting the body, lemon is high in vitamin c and renowned for its healing properties, on top of that Manuka Honey has incredible anti-bacterial/anti-fungal properties.

I hope you feel 100% very soon!

Wishing you health, happiness and sparkle,

Natural Metabolism Boosters

13 Feb

It’s incredible to think that we can boost our metabolism without even trying. Here’s how:

Green Tea contains a compound which reacts with caffeine to boost both fat oxidation and resting metabolic rate by a staggering 20%.

Red Peppers are given their incredible flavour with a chemical called Capsaicin which can increase your resting metabolic rate by up to 25%.

Eating Breakfast kick starts the metabolism. On average, people who don’t have breakfast eat an extra 100 calories a day. I love to start my day with my ‘Get up and Glow’ green smoothie (recipe coming very soon).

Avoid processed foods all the chemicals play havoc with your metabolism. Where possible go organic, I know it’s pricey but you’ll feel a million times better.

Chilli fires up your metabolism and aids your body in processing fats more efficiently.

Wishing you happiness and sparkle,
